| At present, bearing steel is the preferred material for manufacturing rolling mill bearings. Bearing steel has all the characteristics mentioned above, and the uniformity of chemical composition, the content and distribution of non-metallic inclusions, the distribution of carbides and other requirements of bearing steel are very strict, which is one of the most stringent requirements in all steel production.

| In 1976, international Organization for Standardization ISO included some general bearing steel numbers into international standards, and divided bearing steel into four categories: fully quenched bearing steel, surface hardening bearing steel, stainless bearing steel, high temperature bearing steel and so on.

The classification method of bearing steel that has been included in the standard in China is similar to ISO, corresponding to four categories: high carbon chromium bearing steel, carburized bearing steel, corrosion resistant bearing steel and high temperature bearing steel. Bearing steel commonly used in rolling mill bearings are mainly high carbon chromium bearing steel and carburized bearing steel.
